Dental X-Rays

What are Dental X-Rays?

Dental x-rays are crucial diagnostic tools that help to detect a wide range of different problems within the mouth. They are taken at most of your dental visits in our office. Dental x-rays use a small amount of radiation so that they are safe for regular use. Patients of all ages can benefit from having these x-rays taken.

Why are Dental X-Rays needed?

The reason dental x-rays may be needed is because you’re coming in as a new patient or for a bi-annual checkup appointment. These x-rays can even be used to detect cavities and other problems if you come in for an emergency. We may take x-rays before, during and after certain procedures, especially oral surgeries. These x-rays allow us to get an in-depth view of your smile.

What do Dental X-Rays detect?

X-rays can be used to detect a range of different dental problems and issues. They often find things that would otherwise go undetected during a regular dental appointment. Some of the things that x-rays can help to find include:

• Cavities
• Bone loss
• Impacted teeth
• Infections and abscesses
• Problematic restorations
• Pediatric growth and development

What to expect when having Dental X-Rays taken?

We will drape a lead apron or vest over your shoulders. This is to protect your body from any radiation that is used during the x-ray procedure. We then place a tiny device into the mouth and aim the x-ray machine itself at this device. The x-ray is taken and the device is moved to another area of the mouth to repeat the process. We may take several x-rays at each of your appointments or on an as-needed basis. We use a small amount of radiation to take and develop the images, making them safe for anyone coming into our office to have the work done. Dental x-rays are safe for patients of all ages and varying medical needs.

If you think you might need new dental x-rays and want to learn more about the procedure, call our office today and we can further assist you.
