Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling is a type of restoration that replaces areas in a tooth that have become decayed. Tooth decay is incredibly common and can affect both children and adults alike. If the decay is ignored, it will eventually get to the point where it is affecting the entire tooth and causes the need for a root canal. Before it’s able to get this bad, the decay can be removed and a filling put into its place.

Why are Dental Fillings needed?

A dental filling will be needed if you have an area of decay, most commonly referred to as a cavity. The decay is removed carefully before the new filling is put into place. Composite resin fillings are tooth-colored and blend in well with the rest of your tooth. Fillings can last for many years before they may need to be replaced.

Who is a good candidate for Dental Fillings?

We will perform an examination to determine if you have any cavities. X-rays help us to further determine if a cavity is present in any one of your teeth. Once it’s determined that you have a cavity, we’ll schedule you to come in to have a filling placed. We can place multiple fillings at the same appointment if they’re within the same area of the mouth.

What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?

We begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area. We then work to remove any and all decay from the tooth. The small hole is then prepared for the new filling and the material we’ll be using is matched to the tooth. The material is put into the tooth and smoothed into place. It is then cured into place so that it does not shift or move. Your new filling will last for many years and you can still floss and brush your teeth as you normally would. We can even place composite fillings to replace amalgam (metal) fillings in your mouth.
